Crysis 2 Review

Console: Xbox 360

UK Release Date: March 24th, 2011

“Quite possibly the most stunning game on the Xbox 360”, that’s a very bold statement but it’s true. New York City, the setting for many videogames, yet never in this sort of setting, the first time you set your eyes upon the Big Apple is after you’ve fought for your life trying to escape from submarine following an unknown attack, not long after you’re soon dragged to safety and this is where the real fun begins.

You play as US Marine “Alcatraz” and follow his story in his quest to save New York city from a mysterious attack using the quite awesome nanosuit and using its full capabilitys to mow down all enemies that stand in your way from saving the city that never sleeps.
Once you’ve acquired the nanosuit it’s quite a while before the real power you truly possess. The suit opens up a whole new way of combat, allowing you how to play whatever way you want, full steam ahead with gun fight after gun fight, or you could choose the more stealthy option, sneaking up on your foe’s to quietly subdue them, leaving no trace that you were ever there. Your way of playing is also helped by the nanosuit’s visor; this allows you to tag enemies, weapons, ammo locations and various methods of getting from A to B, be it over watch, flank or stealth.

You can upgrade your suit as you progress through the game, enabling you to see the routes your enemies will take, making your footsteps softer, ideal for sneaking up on the enemies, to being able to reduce the amount of fall damage you can take. Whatever style of play you choose to take, there is more than likely to be an upgrade that’ll appeal to you.

Weapon customization is instantaneously meaning you can add or remove the silencer from your weapon as soon as you want or add an under-mounted shotgun. This allows you to adapt to whatever situation you find yourself in without having to search high and low for a different type of weapon or attachment in order to change the tide of a battle, something that other games could learn from, especially as it doesn’t disrupt the flow of combat.

There is certainly replay ability, a new game plus allows you to start all over again with your powers intact from how you finished your last game. The game is probably best though when your suit is powerful, but not too powerful. Once you’ve added upgrade after upgrade you seem to find that all you’ll be doing is going through wave after wave of enemies with seemingly no trouble and move onto the next objective.

Multiplayer is well, different, certainly not for the short tempered. People camping in corners is bad enough on other FPS games, let alone when someone is using stealth camouflage or ploughing round after round into an enemy only for them to have armour equipped is certainly a big turn off for the majority of people. However if you stick with it there are some very rewarding moments and can be a lot of fun once you’ve adapted to the new style of play.

Crysis 2 is defiantly a must buy game for any FPS fan or quite simply for anyone who owns an Xbox 360, the campaign will last you between 10-12 hours and there is certainly replay ability there with various difficulty levels for players to challenge themselves with and a very good multiplayer mode with lots of depth if you can keep your temper and persevere with how people play.
